How ironic, I just finished answering a similar question in this thread about FlashPath Smartmedia adapters.

I have an Acomdata USB 6-in-1 MultiFlash card reader, for CompactFlash, SmartMedia, SD/MMC, and Sony Mediastick. It works with my Knoppix box without a kernel recompile; I wrote a knoppix.net mini-howto about it. However, I don't use Mandrake or Red Hat, so I don't know if it will work without a kernel recompile for you.

The cannon a75/80 cameras work good with linux. I have an a70. Check out the compatibility lists for gphoto2 for cameras.

Card readers nearly always work, I have a 6in1 as well...

Only thing is you sometimes have to put the card into the reader first, then plug the reader into the usb for it to detect properly.

Card type doesn't matter much, I like CF but it's a personal choice.

I use mandrake BTW...
