digicam is not recognized

ok i have a digital camera that i have used on linux before easily. i recently switched to ubuntu and decided to go back to genbtoo. when i went back to gentoo it was not able to recognize my camera. it should be recognized as a mass storage device so i should just be able to mount /dev/sda1 but it doesnt work. it will recognize my usb pen drive but not the camera and not a usb gamepad i have. does anyone know what is going on here.

What does /var/log/messages show when you plug the camera in and turn it on? It should be telling it's recognised the camera at least and what device it's assigning it to. Also, what does

i have no /var/log/devices and /proc/bus/usb/devices shows:
