Devices only working as users with root permissions in Slackware 12.2

I have a Microtek Scanmaker X6EL SCSI scanner. I just performed a fresh install of 12.2 and installed KDE 4.1 (dual boot configuration with Windows XP). The scanner shows up when logged in as root, but not as any
other user unless I grant that user root privileges, which, of course,
I don't want to do. The user is a member of the scanner group. I also have the same problem with my cd and dvd drive and usb devices like memory sticks. Everything else works fine. From what I've been able to tell of my research online, a number of people are having a similar problem. Does anyone know how to get these devices work as a user without root privileges?

Thanks.

Kevin

Try adding your user to the plugdev group. See http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d-this-566862/

Thanks. The usb devices and optical drives are working now. The scanner is still getting a not available error, though. Any ideas?

Hmm... don't know. Maybe there's something here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...roblem-606100/ or https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...rrent-638690/?
