/dev/video0 (bttv) woes

I have a Happauge WinTV-PVR-250 card, trying to get xawtv to run. However, I can't seem to get the bttv driver to recognize my card.

A little background - I have been trying to get this working for a week. Previously, used Win2000 with this card. When the time changed, Win2000 scheduler stopped working and I haven't been able to get it working anymore. This is important for us, because we homeschool and I use the WinTV card to record the classroom lessons from sattelite. Next week, my wife will have to teach without the help of the satellite feeds. If I don't get this fixed by Sat afternoon, I will be forced to re-install Win2000 and forget the linux option to get classes for the following week.

Running Slackware 9.1, kernel 2.4.22 (very nice distro overall) Using the bare.i kernel, no customizations. Here is relevant lspci:

00:0d.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hauppauge computer works Inc.: Unknown device 4001
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 11
Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2

Here is /etc/modules.conf:

# i2c
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options i2c-core i2c_debug=1
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1

# bttv
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
options bttv card=2 radio=1 # Note: I have tried both card=10 and card=2, neither work #
options tuner debug

Here is end of rc.modules:

# Video
/sbin/modprobe videodev
/sbin/modprobe i2c-algo-bit
/sbin/modprobe i2c-core
/sbin/modprobe bttv
/sbin/modprobe tuner

When rc.modules runs, here is the relevant output from dmesg:

Linux video capture interface: v1.00
i2c-core.o: i2c core module
i2c-algo-bit.o: i2c bit algorithm module
bttv: driver version 0.7.107 loaded

bttv: using 4 buffers with 2080k (8320k total) for capture
bttv: Host bridge is VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133]

Here is listing of relevant contents of /dev/

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Oct 30 23:38 /dev/video -> video0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 81, 0 Oct 30 23:27 /dev/video0

crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 81, 3 Oct 30 23:27 /dev/video3

When I run v4l-conf, I get the following:

v4l-conf: using X11 display :0.0
dga: version 2.0
mode: 1280x960, depth=24, bpp=32, bpl=5120, base=0xf0000000
can't open /dev/video0: No such device

Finally, when I run xawtv,. I get:

v4l-conf: using X11 display :0.0
dga: version 2.0
mode: 1280x960, depth=24, bpp=32, bpl=5120, base=0xf0000000
can't open /dev/video0: No such device
root@asus:~# xawtv
This is xawtv-3.90, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.22)
can't open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such device
no video grabber device available

I am running the savage video driver (VIA K[TM]133 chipset), and I do have the v4l module loaded in XF86Config.

At one point I even dumped Slackware and tried Lindows (I was, and am, indeed desparate). Their click-n-run warehouse has xawtv for download. I received exactly the same error messages as above when I tried to run xawtv using Lindows.

In summary, it looks like the kernel sees the WinTV card on the PCI bus, but for some reason the bttv driver doesn't recognize it. I like Slackware, I would like to continue using it and dump Win2000. Can you help me get this combo running?

Did some googling for you, and this is what I found.

These links look relevant: ivtv.sourceforge.net -- iTVC15 drivers for the Hauppauge WinTV PVR-250 and PVR-350 TV capture cards, Hauppauge WinTV PVR Linux Driver project, and WinTV PVR 250 Under Linux.

You should also search linuxquestions.org, specifically this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=22390. There are several linuxquestions.org members who have the same card, and say that it is one of the best for PVR in linux. You may want to email those members directly.

Slashdot has a discussion about TV capture cards, and the Hauppauge WinTV PVR-250 is mentioned several times as being the best, including Linux.

I use an ATI TVWonder VE, myself, so I can't help you beyond suggesting the above links. If you do manage to solve the problem, kindly post your solution. Good luck!
