Detecting internal Modem problem

Hi all
I'm new to Linux and have just installed the Fedora 4 distribution and am having no luck getting it to detect my pc's internal modem.

In rotten old windows 98 it's configured on com port 4

I've searched through the dmesg output, but there is no mention of the modem device there either.
I've tried using /dev/modem and the different /dev/ttySx when setting up with the internet connection wizard but have no luck.

Modem type is an ESS56STH-PI

Where do I go from here ? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.......Twowheels

p.s. apologies if I'm in the wrong forum, but I assumed that this would be the appropriate one. Please let me know if I should be posting this elsewhere.

I believe that's a lucent chipset - what's the output of /sbin/lspci for your modem? Once you figure that out you probably want to go to http://linmodems.org and see what they have to say about it there.

modem

Have spent a fair amount of time with dialup modems and can tell you this. Linux is getting way better with softmodems also known as winmodems......but...... I have installed both soft and hdwr internal PCI modems - they both require drivers- you might find drivers tomorrow, you might still be looking 2 weeks from now.

If you are new to linux my suggestion is:
1. Make sure your ISP is linux friendly
2. Go with external serial port hdwr modem - they require NO drivers.
3. US Robotics or BestData ($20-$80 new) . I have purchased all my modems at flea markets/thrift shops for $5 or less.
4.Use Kppp to setup

good luck!
