destroyed boot disk

Let's cut right to the chase. I have installed linux SuSE on my computer. It installed fine, but since I have Windows installed on my system too, (I don't know how well that will be tolerated on this sight), I made a boot disk on my floppy. It accidently got damaged. Can someone tell me how to create another without calling me stupid for not making multiple copies or without using advanced computer jargon. Thank you in advance.

We don't give people a hard time for using Windows or for much of anything else for that matter. The computer jargon is unavoidable when talking about Linux.

You can get back into your Linux system by using your SuSE install CD. Boot the install CD and choose the rescue mode. Then tell the rescue mode that you want to boot your SuSE Linux system.

Once you are back in your Linux system you can recreate the boot floppy. Log in as root. Mount your install CD. Insert a floppy in your floppy drive. Open a terminal and issue the following command.

dd if=/media/cdrom/disks/bootdisk of=/dev/fd0

For an explanation of what dd does issue the command:

man dd

and you will get an explanation that reads like a programmer mumbling to himself.

" but how do i tell the minimum linux to go to a window manager ect?"

I don't use boot floppies so offhand I am not sure exactly where you are in the process when you ask this question. If you have logged in as root then you can type in: kdm. If you have logged in as either root or user then you can type in: startx.

You can also try using YaST to make a boot floppy. Maybe it will make a smarter one. YaST can probably make a bootloader floppy which is more convenient than a boot floppy.

The way that I make a boot floppy is to use lilo which is more complicated than the above methods:

The only reason I have boot floppies on hand is for when I destroy lilo on the MBR. Most people find useing a bootloader, either lilo or grub, on the MBR more convenient than using a boot floppy.
