Then people using ubuntu based distro's will get errors, as *buntu doesn't create a real root account by default, so su - will fail.
If I'm not sure what their distro use, I'll suggest "use sudo su - for blah, if it gives an error about sudo command not found, use su -".
When you don't know what distro the OP uses, simply prepend a note explaining the extra parameter that the minority of users will need, then give the traditional majority instruction. Or make the first instruction:

sudo passwd root
and instruct to login as root before following the primary instruction(s).
^Nah, too much work (and that's just going to confuse n00b even more, as evidenced by this thread). If user wants people to spoonfeed him/her commands, then user needs to state what distro they're using and not hop between them in the same thread without letting other posters know. If they can't bother to do that, I can't bother to explain such a basic thing. Anyway, this thread is (thankfully) over, so I'm unsubscribing...
