Follow Up: Although I've never used Ubuntu I kinda like this. I might wait till I get another sata drive before I install Slackware-12.

I found that Ubuntu bunta'd my ability to mess with the OS.
Your temptation from slackware will be to find the controlling configuration files and edit them. It is better to look for a distro tool first. Make sure it's not in the repos before installing from source. Don't hand compile the kernel unless you have no option. (Recently: apt-get or aptitude: pick one and stick with it.) Avoid install scripts like EasyUbuntu or Automatix... as a slacker you will view these with suspicion anyway.

I hoped that they will roll out RedHat Enterprise 5 as Desktop or Workstation release with one year Redhat Support subscription... but Michael maybe had a couple of golf rounds and drinks with the ubuntu crew...

Quite likely, they are very similar guys.
Personally, I was expecting SUSE and an MS "please don't sue us" deal for desktops too...

Which is not to say it cannot be done.
I just have no idea how modified the kernel can get without throwing off which package dependencies. Too radical and I suspect you'll find some packages stop working and need to be reinstalled... and that assuming the dependency runs off the environment and not the record of the installed kernel package.

The package management is seriously sexy though. With all compatible HW, there really is no need. (Suddenly that intel chipset don't seem so second rate...)
