Dell Laptop and Non-Dell Charger Hack?

Hi all,

So my Dell charger went up, and to save a lot of money I got a non-Dell charger to find out that it does not charge with it (with the a message saying my wattage could not be determined and that my battery might not charge). Google searches seem to reveal this has to do with Dell not making it laptops tolerant of anything non-Dell.

Does anyone know any hacks, using either the rich command line of my Linux system or my BIOS settings to allow my system to charge again? I have a Dell Inspiron 15R N110.

Thanks for any ideas

There is a Dallas 1-wire memory chip installed in Dell AC power adapters. By the way the actual battery charger is inside the computer. If the laptop can not read the chip it will not charge the battery. I do not know of any BIOS or software hacks to bypass reading the memory chip.

@ rokytnji: BIOS can see my battery, but it says it cannot determine determine the wattage and the like. Thanks.

@ michealk: Yeah that's what I read about the Dallas chip - if I can't find something in the manpages in the next week or so, I guess I'll cough up the pretty penny for a Dell charger. I love how parts can be switched around so easily with Dell hardware, but this charger issue is really agrivating. Thanks.

If anyone has an idea, please join in! Grazij.

Get a replacement maybe from somewhere like this. https://www.discountelectronics.com/...ry?category=37 or a place that you trust.

Dell parts are all over the place.

Thanks for that idea - that's what I'll probably end up doing.
