DELL INSPIRON B130: sound and wireless

Hi, I have a B130 laptop and I am having a hard time to configure my sound and my wireless on it. I tried ndiswrapper for the wireless with the drivers supplied by DELL but no success at all. I followed many posts that I saw here and in many other forums and zero success so far. As of my sound card I just never got it to work and this is my first try.

My dmesg output doesnt seem to help(at least not help me):

Regarding the wireless you may see dmesg warning to check /var/log/syslog and I did so just to find out it complains that I dont have /etc/ndiswrapper/ which I have and the driver file is there!

Can anyone help me here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cmetelko 03-18-2006 02:13 PM

Which version of ndiswrapper are you using? I had problems with earlier versions,
on B120 with SUSE 10.0 but using v 1.9 it worked fine.

leosgb 03-18-2006 04:27 PM

Well I guess that is my problem. I am running Debian Sarge (2.6.8) and my /var/log/messages says my ndiswrapper is 1.1. Do you have any idea of how I can fix it? Should I just download the sources from their website and compile it w/o using apt? Thanks for your reply.

Hi, it works now! The problem was the windows XP driver supplied by DELL. I found on google references saying it had some problems with ndiswrapper but that Acer has the same drivers. So I downloaded Acer's driver and removed the old one and now it works. Thanks for helping me.

ok.....but how about sound? alsa is not working with my b130 and I am missing my sound. Anyone have sound working on a b130?

I am using alsa here. You have to compile the sound support in the kernel (or as a module) for the intel audio device. It works, and very well. There is only a small patch that needs to be applied to have the mic presence sensed correctly so it will turn off the speakers and you get audio only on the headphones. Just compile the support and it will work. Remember to add support for the alsa system too.

Hi Leo, I've read your posts here. I was wondering if you could elaborate a little more on what it was that you did to get your wireless and sound working. I've found an Acer driver that gives me the "correct" .inf and .sys files, but it's not working.
I am trying the Linuxant WLAN Driver, not ndiswrapper. But this isn't working out either. Read that the problem must be an IRQ conflict. Sounds like an old DOS nightmare.
As for the sound, I've never recompiled a kernel.
BTW... I'm running Debian here.I can plug in an ethernet cable, and everything works fine. Kind of defeats the "wireless" concept though.

Thanks -Bill Chellis

PS.... Not sure where the "Newbie" designation comes from. I've been running Red Hat, Slackware, and Knoppix for 3-years now. I'm "new" to Debian.

Ok. Hum, the newbie comes from the fact that you have just made your first post here :) so congrat. Soon the system will give you a "higher rank" as if it means you know anything at all hehehe (I have had help from many so called newbies here that know more than many "gurus"). But lets get back to the point:

I run gentoo here. I followed this:
http://www.math.umd.edu/~olsson/jerome-install.html

For the sound first:
My current kernel is 2.6.16 and it all works w/o problems. I used Debian before but I decided to change distro because it took too long to had stable kernels that were current (of course there were other issues too but this is the one that is related to this problem). I believe you are either running experimental stuff or you should have an older kernel, right? If not, then it is a matter of a kernel compilation. I had no IRQ issues. With my 2.6.11 kernel (when I started trying to get my sound to work) I had to patch the kernel and my problem was solved. So, can you post back w/ your kernel version? 2.6.16 kernel solved all problems that I had w/ sound before.

To recompile your kernel:
change to sources directory --> cd /usr/src/linux
configure the kernel --> make menuconfig (here is where you need to add ALSA support and anything else that seems interesting to you, if you get here let me know so I can send you my config file to be used as a "model")
compile it all --> make && make modules_install
the kernel is /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/bzImage, just copy it to your boot area

Regarding the wireless. yes, I use the Acer driver. I had several problems w/ original DELL drivers that would give me many errors here. I read somewhere (dont remeber where) that Acer drivers were perfect for ndiswrapper. So I download them and they indeed work. I use ndiswrapper 1.2 here. My suggestion is to try ndiwsrapper, ok? It works.

Good luck and welcome to the forums.

ps: i just figured what linuxant is. hehehe dont use it: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m...x.php/LinuxAnt
