Dell Dimension 9100 Ethernet Problem

I am trying to run KnoppMyth (based on Knoppix) on a Dell Dimension 9100, which uses an Intel Pro/100 VE onboard ethernet card. I know this card is supported by Linux, but for some reason the device is not being recognized. I have downloaded and installed the most recent Intel Linux drivers from Intel's web site, but it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it? I have extremely limited experience with Linux, so please be descriptive.

That's a popular card and should be supported by default. You can run 'lspci' and see if it shows up. I forget which module that card uses, I think it's called eepro100, if it shows up with 'lspci' you should be able to load the module with 'modprobe eepro100'. If that works, you can add the line eepro100 to /etc/modules to have it load at boot.

I too am having problems with the 9100. I installed Debian (Woody, not realizing it was the older version), and it won't recognize my driver. I upgraded to the 2.4.18 kernel, and downloaded one of the drivers from the Intel site. I try to install it, and when I do "make install", I get an error about the makefile not found.

I tried the above suggestion about "modprobe eepro100", I get the message:
init_module: No Such device
insmod failed
insmod eepro100 failed

Not really sure where to go from here. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks.

Hello all -
Dell Dimension 5100
Mandriva LE2005 AND tried Ubuntu Live CD -
No luck of any kind getting the drivers to work.
Ubuntu recognises it nicely, as does Mandriva but nada.

I'm getting grumpy now. I have 3 PCI slots - 1 has my WLAN card, one has my soundcard (because of course, no one recognises the on-board one) and the third has my Radeon graphics card (another sore point...). Therefore I don't even HAVE another slot to stick a nice cheap NIC in!

Anyone?

Hello All,

I'm having the same problem. I just installed Fedore Core 4 on a Dell Dimension 9100. Fedora is not able to recognize my Ethernet Controller. I tried /sbin/modprobe eepro100.

the command went through without any problems. Can any one tell me what I should do next ?
thanks

Senthil
