Dell D600 - no sound

Hi,

I have a Dell Latitude D600 notebook with Mandriva 2005LE. Pretty much everything works fine, except for the sound.

Mandriva's harddrake detects the device fine and provides a list of drivers.

Using the default driver (snd-intel8x0, ALSA), no sound plays but no error messages are displayed. Using an OSS driver (i810_audio), an error message is displayed when KDE starts up saying that the default device cannot be opened. I also tried play in the shell; again, error message: can't open /dev/dsp.

Please can anybody help me with this matter?

Thanks,
- QS Computing.

Lets start with the simple.
When using ALSA did you turn up all of the volume controls on the mixer? If you're using Gnome that would be gmix I think. KDE would be kmix.

Yes, I did.

Actually, just by chance I plugged in headphones, and they worked with KDE's notification sounds and when playing music through amaroK, but the builtin speakers do not work.

Problem solved.

Enabling the "External Amplifier" switch in KMix enabled the internal speakers.
