I had the same problem with a Compaq 1200, its was a mismatched install of Slackware 9.0 and a binary install of XFree86 4.2.1.

Finally after enough fighting I got a normal XF86Config to work with 4.3.0 and the problem went away. Oddly though, X would only get that derangement after being stopped once and started again.

Cheers,

As for SuSE: try LDC at e.g. 75 Hz for your monitor and use the native resolution e.g. 1024x768 at e.g. 16 bit colors. You need to cal sax2 at init 3 as root to try (test) the configuration. Save on every successfull step.

For any linux try run xf86config as root and enter your hardware specifications. Else, try edit /etc/X11/XF86Config or XF86Config-4 manually. Don't forget to enter the correct vertical and horizontal refresh rate.

Try xvidtune to adjust off-center display.
