DELL 1700 LaserPrt on RH EL 3

Hi,

I am trying to install a DELL 1700 Laser printer (USB) on RedHat EL 3 WS.
Dell provides driver for it (it seems that DELL sells Lexmark printers; 1700 is told to be Lexmark E232).

A,
=> I installed the driver, created a virtual device, a printer queue;
=> I could print a testpage and also a simple text file from the driver-GUI;
=> I could print using "lp -d prt_name file_name";
=> I could print an Emacs buffer;

=> I could NOT print any other application (firefox, gedit, ooffice); even if I set the printer command to 'lp -d prt_name';

B,
=> on a dell-mailing list I found that somebody else could solve his problem using the driver from the Lexmark
==> I uninstalled the dell driver (rpm -e and rmdir)
==> I installed the lexmark e232 driver, printer: no test page from the driver GUI;

C,
==> I uninstalled the lexmark driver and reinstalled the dell driver;
==> no test page from the driver GUI!, but printing from the command line (lp) OK; printing from applications fails.

==============
Do you have any suggestion how to install the DELL 1700 on linux?

Thanks,
Tamas

I have used turborpint driver.It works perfectly(except for some PDF files) in RH9.Just go through the manual.
Regarding DELL providing driver,are you talking about http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-per...&searchLang=en
or some othe driver which DELL may have provided along with CD's shipped with the 1700 printer?

I tried both the lexmark.com and Dell driver on CD.
But according to dell the 1700 printer driver does not work on newer RH.

We replaced our Dell printer with a HP LJ.
