Which Dell 5150 are you talking about? The Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop or the Dell Dimension 5150 desktop?

What about entering the BIOS? Reset to default setup.

Will not turn on to enter bios. when power button is pushed the power light comes on, i hear the hard drive and the cd drive kick but then nothing. comp gets very hot in one spot on bottom. when power button is held down the power light remains on untill battery is removed. took apart and fan was clogged. i think might have burnt out chip that sits underheat sensor attached to fan, this is area that gets very hot. can this chip be replaced

Parts acquisition will be the problem. Chip level replacement is a problem for people who do not have the resource(s) to replace surface mount devices.

You could try a reputable shop for a quote to repair. But unless the shop has resources too acquire the parts then you could be wasting time & money.

What about getting a replacement Dell 1501 from ebay that has a bad display. Assuming yours is OK, then replacing the display with yours would be a way to save some $$.

Or you could sell yours for parts.
Good luck!

If the OP is lucky its just the CPU. That should be a fairly easy fix.

If its a surface mout chip, I'd honestly just give up. Like onebuck said, its hard to souce the parts, and hard to install them. If you have the parts, skill and equipment needed it wouldnt be so bad, but getting anybody else to do the same job will not be cost effective IMO.

sorry but is the cpu the chip that sits it that white square piece with all the pin holes, that has the flathead screw that locks it in? this is the chip that was getting very hot. I have the part, as long as the same chip from an hp would work learning the skills tho, lol. not even my computer fixing it for free for a lady i dont even know. I enjoy this stuff. like a new hobby i guess

That sounds like tis the CPU, I cant think of any other chips on P4 moibles that is locked in with a flathead screw.

You would need the parts to match exactly. Even minor core speed, FSB speed or voltage differences could result in the system not booting, and/or damage to the parts.

Hi,

Make certain of the part. Some Dell 1501 series used the AMD Turion64x2 Mobile technology as the processor.

Your CPU sould have a heat pipe attached that will have the fan flow over the pipe fins. The removal of the pipe then the CPU will allow replacement. That's what the diagram will do for you to identify proper breakdown.

Go to Dell.com to get a physical view for breakdown. Make sure to match the model # and use the serial # to specify the exact unit.

Again, Good luck!

thanks for the info. I have already took the comp apart and cleanes the years of dust and lint that has blocked the fan exaust thing. I guess the heat pipe is that orange tube. i remember the chip did say amd so i will take the dell and hp apart again and see if they are the same. thanks again

Oh, so its really a 1501? I thought from Sjonnie48s post, and the OP not correcting Sjonnie48 that it must have been a 5150....

Hi,

@OP Your title & within the original post content a Dell 1501 was specified. Dell 1501 Laptop or Dell 5150 Laptop?

From the title & content: I will continue to believe the laptop in question is a '1501' unless the OP specifies otherwise.

Yes it is 1501 laptop, i had put the wrong numbers in the title and had went back and changed it. I repaced the chip and it did not change anything. When power button is pressed the green led power symbol comes on but there is no display

Valid logic, and as it turns out totally correct

You can try holding down the power button for up to a minute (and if that doesnt work, try removing the mains power and battery, then try again) . With some laptops, that resets the CMOS. You can always just remove the CMOS battery (with no mains or battery again) as well, but I'd try the power button method before digging around to find the CMOS battery.
