Decompiling Kernel (for NVIDIA driver?)

Hello all,

I am currently trying to install the most recent NVIDIA driver for Linux and I figured out how to get the file running, but I can't get past much else.

Eventually it tells me that NVIDIA has to do something to my Kernel, and it cannot find something on it's FTP site. So I then tell it to manually do something to my Kernel. But for some reason it keeps giving me an error telling me that I have to decompile my kernel. Has anybody else experienced this problem? I am running Knoppix v3.2 on hard drive installation with an NVIDIA 2Go.

Thanks, everybody, for your help.

You need the kernel source code installed.

Get the latest tarball from your nearest kernel mirror (find it on www.kernel.org)

Uncompress and untar this into /usr/src.

If the directory is called linux-{version}, make a symlink with the command

ln -s linux-{version} linux

Then cd linux, make xconfig (assuming you are in X) and configure the kernel. It doesn't have to be very accurate, you aren't going to compile it. Then quit out of xconfig.

Next, run make depend.

Once thats done, you should have done enough for the nvidia drivers to compile.

Or the other option is to use a proper distribution rather than knoppix. Using a distribution would mean that there are probably already compiled kernel modules for nvidia which would just get downloaded.

Darren.
