You need to get usb support. From a consol as su do modconf. This will present a list of drivers. Go down the list to usb and select. Go down this list until you see HID and select. The driver will be installed. When the support is there the light in the mouse will come on. The following is my entry in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 for my intellimouse;
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "BaudRate" "1200"
Option "Resolution" "100"
Option "Buttons" "7"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
