debian: alsa started but no sound...

Hello,

I have installed alsa successfully for my sis7012 soundcard. But there's still no device for it but the alsa modules starting is ok:

/etc/init.d/alsa restart
Storing ALSA mixer settings...done.
Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 0.9.0beta12): done.
Starting ALSA sound driver (version 0.9.0beta12): (intel8x0)
#>

But even if I added my user to the group audio these errors occur:

:~$ cat /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Logout.wav > /dev/audio
bash: /dev/audio: No such device

The same at the KDE login:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)

Can anybody help me? I don't know what to do now...

Greetings
Jo

Did you run the snddevices script that comes with the Alsa driver package? Unless you use devfs (not likely if you use Debian) you need to do this to create the devices.

a simple solution , might not so simple, is to compile a custom kernel...

Yes, I run it. But there's something strange:

ll /dev/snd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Apr 21 21:58 /dev/snd -> /proc/asound/dev

and:

ll /proc/asound/dev
total 0
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 33 Apr 21 22:20 timer

is this normal/correct?

Jo
