Debian A8N-SL1 Deluxe sound & Nvidia 6800GT problems

Hi,

I recently purchased a new system and am running a dual-boot with Debain r3.1 and Windows XP Pro. My dual boot functions well, but note item 3 below.

My system details are:

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce 4 SLI Socket 939 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Processor (939)
1024MB TWINX-3200C2 DDR RAM Corsair (2X512MB)
Seagate Serial ATA 200GB 7200RPM 8mb Cache
Albatron 256MDDR PC6800GT PCI Express Video
BENQ FP71E+ 17 inch LCD monitor Dual Input
Powersupply Antec ATX TruePower 430W ver2
Lian Li PC61 Aluminium USB Black case

I have about a year's worth of random Linux experience and have managed to get a reasonable amount of what I need working. Below is the output of some commands that should be of some help. I am having the following problems:

1. When configuring xfree86, I have had to utilise the "vesa" option and hence my Nvidia card is not working properly. I have tried various drivers (including Nvidia's official one) and have had no success in compiling and installing a driver.

2. I have no sound in Debian and alsaconfig seems to compile modules but not install them.

3. A minor problem, whenever I reboot from XP to Debian (or vice versa) my time seems to constantly change. I suspect this is an issue with timezones, but do I need to set both to GMT? I am in Brisbane (Australia) and believe that I have both set to GMT+10:00.

Below are some command outputs:

Sound and graphics work fine in XP. Please let me know if you need any more command output as this is already a long post.

Any help that could be offered would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks....

You have about the same hardware as I.

I am running SUSE 9.3 Professional, which is the only one out of the box (following an online update) that has worked. Sound, chipset are OK. Graphics config not so good. Standard install will detect and configure what looks like the only combination of monitor type and graphics driver that works.

I have a geforce 6600GT, I am having may issues with this card and linux. May have to wait a while while unil the drivers are updated.

I finally got the nvidia driver working after a few days of pain. For one, I'm not sure if the driver will work with 2.6.8 kernel. I think I read somewhere that it doesn't. I am running a 2.6.12. Also I think you need to get the kernel source and compile it yourself without the support for nvidia driver since you are installing a third party driver. Also when you install the driver you need to be at the console (no Xserver running). Also I am not sure if the driver works with xorg. I am currently using xfree86. If anyone knows if it works with xorg let me know.

As for sound, you need the snd_hda_codec module which is in the 2.6.12 kernel. I don't think it is in 2.6.8. Again recompile with support for alsa and snd_hda_codec configured as a module.
