Hello all --

Linux debian 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Fri Mar 13 18:08:45 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

So I am not sure if I have it working or not...? I can "startx" successfully and I get the desktop (using fluxbox), but the refresh is *really* slow. I would stay the video is 5-10 frames per second, that slow.
I am looking for help on getting the NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT working properly.

I fixed this:

[config/hal] couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))

By installing it: apt-get install hal


Now I am working on this warning, not sure if it will make a difference or not.?

Get a non-nvidia kernel, install kernel headers package, download latest nvidia Linux driver from nvidia.com and see if it makes any difference.
The warning you have possibly means that the driver module is older than your video chipset, and did not have an ID for it.

Before you install the driver from Nvidia make sure you purge all the following files:

The readme for the nVidia 173 driver does not list the 9400GT card as being supported..
The readme for the nVidia 180 driver DOES list the 9400GT Card as being supported..

You must use the driver from nVidias site..

I second The Troopers warning about making sure you PURGE the Debian driver packages before installing the driver from nVidia's website..

Should be as simple as shutting down X, purging the nvidia packages, and running the install script fro the nvidia Driver. You already have everything else in place.

and just in case lspci isn't identifying the card properly either..
update-pciids

fluxbox

Then did the following:
apt-get install linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 linux-headers-2.6.26-1-686
reboot to that kernel
apt-get install xorg fluxbox
downloaded the nvidia driver.
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.29-pkg1.run -k $(uname -r)
andů.

You will need xserver and all dependencies.
What you don't need is anything nvidia from Debian.

The Xorg log is rather obvious, with the video drivers currently not installed, those errors would be expected.

Installing xorg, should have pulled all the xserver dependencies in so you should be OK there.. just have to figure out that error.

It looks like you clipped the error message off.. I'm going to guess the first part of the error message was....

I can "startx" now and the load time is much quicker.


This leads me to a new question.
I installed iceaweasel and flash player 10 (10.0 r22)
Watching youtube.com should be smooth at this point correct?
The videos are still choppy.
Is it down to options in xorg.conf ?

Did you use debians flash or the installer from adobe.

On my 8600 my flash video was choppy, I downloaded the adobe flash-player and just manually copied the *.so file to the ~/.mozilla/plugin directory. working like a champ now.. no idea why.

Might want to check and make sure Direct rendering is enabled..

aptitude install mesa-utils
glxinfo | grep direct


If the output is YES then you are OK here..


Looks like you want to make sure composite mode is disabled in the driver to start with..
Maybe some ideas in this thread, but the general gist is that nVidia did something in the newer drivers that affected this performance. and that Adobe jsut doesn't give a darn about Linux users..

bummer that the 180.29 driver that fixed the issue for most the people in that thread is what you are already using..

At least a report in the nVidia forums might get the attention of the driver devs..

When viewing flash I noticed that the CPU load is at 98%
This can't be a good sign...

My goal is to be able to view at least 720p videos on my TV. TV is 42" Panasonic (plasma) 1080p.

farslayer: Good news the verdict is OK. Direct rendering is enabled.
I read through the link you provided and added some more options in addtion to the "Extensions" in xorg.conf
It is a bit better but not much, unfortunately.

Next I am going to install mplayer and see it plays videos smoothly.

MPlayer plays the video in slow motion then I get an error.
"Too many packests in the buffer"

Mplayer Drivers tried:
xmga
xv
x11
gl
gl2

I am guessing it should be gl or gl2.
