CUPS prints too many copies of image file

I installed CUPS for the first time yesterday. It prints text files correctly but gives 4 copies of image files when only one is requested. Google shows a few similar problems but no solutions.

Is this something that can be tweaked or is it a bug?
I'm using version 1.4.8-2 on Debian Sid.

I've not noticed this behaviour when I request a print of an image. What image application are you using?

This happened with a jpg file I had just created and saved with my scanner using xsane. But if I just use th Copy facility in xsane, only one copy is printed.

Does the same thing happen if you use another image app? Like Gwenview or GIMP for example.

After some more experiments I'm beginning to think it is more to do with the printer than with CUPS - this is a Samsung ML-2571N. I tried some other image files and they didn't give multiple copies. On the other hand, sometimes the printer just blinks and doesn't print anything, but if I turn it off and on again it then preints OK. So perhaps it is the memory becoming full?

In fact, this happens with ALL files, not just image ones.
