CUPS printer offline

Hi there,

I have a number of printers attached to my server. Once in a while, one of them goes offline. To get the printer working again I have to use printconf. In printconf, I select my printer, click edit, click done, click exit then I save my changes. When I'm back at a prompt the printer starts working again.

My question is this: printconf obviously re-initialises the printer. Is there a command I can run from the prompt to do the same?

Restarting CUPS doesn't work.

The reason for using a command rather than the printconf tool is that I want to script it so end users don't call me each time the printer stops working.

1) In this article, the suggestion is made that you make a backup copy of your printconf file. It would be a simple matter to script the restoration of the printconf file.

2) The command you want is in the last sentence of the article.
