Creating root mirror

Hello,

I am running RedHat Advanced server 2.1 and one of the Hard disk (IBM 36 GB) is showing error. But the root ( / ) and /var is mounted on that disk. I have a extra disk (may not be of same size).
Can someone guide me with detailed steps to take the backup or mirror of that disk ( / & /var ) before it dies completely ? Also can suggest me what all the options I have to take the backup of my faulty disk ?

Thanks,
Vani

How are your hard disks setup, do you have RAID setup or any other schemes we should know about? And what do you mean / and /var are mounted.. what other mounts are there and where, if they're on their own partitions or just simply under /

Hello,

Thanks for your response.
Acutally I am Solaris Admin and know very little about Linux. the fault Hard disk is /dev/sda. This Hard disk has 3 partions.

/dev/sda1 /
/dev/sda3 /home
/dev/sda5 /var

output for DF is below

df -lk
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 10080488 145516 9422904 2% /
/dev/sda3 10080520 4112028 5456424 43% /home
/dev/sdb2 35278572 6967060 26519464 21% /opt
none 2028280 0 2028280 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sdc1 35278540 757380 32729112 3% /u01
/dev/sdc2 35278572 32828 33453696 1% /u02
/dev/sdb1 35278540 1065788 32420704 4% /usr
/dev/sda5 8791828 1274656 7070568 16% /var

I cannot afford to loose any of the partitions and there are no RAID setup.

Let me know if you need any info. I request you to give the command also incase if u need any info.

Thanks,
