Crash w/ ati 3.7.6 drivers & radeon 9200

Hello all,
I updated my gf2mx400 with a radeon 9200 (256mb ram) today & I tried installing ati's 3.7.6 drivers.
My monitor flickers during resolution switch & then the system crashes (damaging my modules.alias & XF86Config files at the same time :)).
XF86 doesn't recognize my card, so I can't use it with X's drivers either, it works with vesa however & on windoze xp, so I guess my card is ok.

Distro: heavily modified LinuxFromScratch with glibc-2.3.3pre (20031202 - no ntml), gcc-3.3.3, XFree86-4.3.0.2 & kernels 2.6.4-grsec & vanilla 2.6.4.

Hardware specs : ASUS A7N8X/Deluxe mobo, Athlon XP 2500 etc.

Any suggestions ?

my 9800Pro crashes all the time with the ATI 3.7.x series drivers. Sometimes it just kills the application, sometimes it reboots the machine.

I'd revert to the old 3.2 driver if I still had it laying around...

i think ya just didn't get the driver to work properly.

for zen_guerrilla's issue.
First uninstall your nvidia driver if you installed anything extra for getting your card to work and don't wait. i saw the nvidia's dependencies problem will having you getting your radeon card to work.

i think you might want to try to get the latest driver from www.ati.com
then reconfigure your card. and see what it does.

here might be a good thread for all of you

Thanx all for answering. Short answers :

- fafoimagne: I guess this towel might become handy :).
- wintermute222: I'm gonna try 3.2.8 (w/ patches for 2.6.x kernels & AMD cpu's) later too. Although AFAIK 3.7.6 is 3.2.8 w/ the aforementioned patches...
- tricky_linux: It's a clean XF86 installation (note that the same XF86 works ok on my centrino lappy), I wiped nvidia's stuff completety. My problem surely isn't caused by agp, since I use 2.6.x & try disabling/enbling AGP8x in bios with the exact same results.

Anyway I'll work it out some more later & I'll post the results...

I still haven't figured out what causes the problem. I even installed xfree86-4.4.0 & debian sid on that box, but still the same.
With debian' s xf86 4.3.0 & my compiled 4.4.0 it works fine w/ dri & stuff (with radeon driver), however I need to use ati's binary drivers for tv-out support.
I upgraded to kernel 2.6.6-rc2-mm1, mobo's bios version is current.
Could anyone help me pls ?

ok i just give you a track: it seems that there is a problem with the module of agp gart. the current agp-gart is useless for our problem. it is not handling radeon!!!! so you have to install module agp-nvidia (cause motherboard chipset) and start again drivers of ati and then module fglrx.
i was unable to solve because of lake of time.

good luck

zen_guerrilla, I got the same problem. I'll keep an eye on this thread. Hopefully, someone knows how to fix it.
If I find a solution, I'll post it here also.

Badut: Do you have the same motherboard & video card ? I was starting to worry if there' s a problem w/ my hardware (altough windoze & xf86-4.4.0 work fine on this box).
Also, I've sent an e-mail to ATI too, but I haven't got an answer so far (and - to be honest - I don't expect to :)).

Badut 04-30-2004 02:09 AM

I have a similar Mobo (ASUS A7N8X-X)
My video card is a Sapphire Radeon 9200SE 128Mb
My CPU is also an Athlon XP 2500
I'm running Fedora Core 1
So our systems are comparable.
I'll spend some time on this over the weekend if I can.
Hopefully one of us will find the answer soon. Good luck :)

Edit:
BTW: if you run your system without installing the ATI drivers, what fps do you get in glxgears?
I get around 63fps full screen 1024*768

I also get around 16fps in chromium with full detail.
You should get a bit higher cause your card is better ;)
