cpu overload

I am running College Linux and when I try to play an mp3 or other sound file either nothing happens or it says. "Sound Server Failure error: cpu overload, aborting." What does this mean?

I'm having the same problem. It started after I updated to KDE 3.2 and also upgraded arts. If you've found a solution, please let me know.
