Angry cpu fan won't shut off on Fedora kernel-2.4.22

I have a dual boot Sony Vaio PCV-RX640 with a 1.3GHz Celeron

I have tried the following distributions all with the same problem of the fan not shutting off:
Debian (not sure which version)
Mandrake (latest as of 1/13/04)
RedHat 9.0
Fedora (latest as of 1/13/04)

I want to use Fedora for now and solve this problem once and for all. Here is some additional info...
uname -r:
2.4.22-1.2115.nptl
there appears to be no "acpi" directory in /proc

When I load Windows XP, the fan quiets down after boot
Unfortunately, I can't see the Motherboard manufacturer's name

I appreciate your help,
Ted

P.S. This is my first post

I've exactly the same problem with my compaq armada E500 laptop . I do have a fan /proc/fan entry, but I don't now if I should do something with that...

/edit
I've found something which could be useful. Linuxted, plz try it out as I'm at my work and can't test it right now. On this page there is a package called acpi_event_scripts-08192003.tar.gz. Just install it with the provided readme and let us know if it works or not.

neutron,
I tried the acpi package you pointed to, but no luck. I now have an acpi directory but no
acpid.... I resorted to putting a quieter fan in - but that is pretty unsatisfying

Wink here is possible solution

Its pretty simple. CPU is noisy because under linux your CPU is running at maximum speed. Since it is running 100%, heat is 100% so FAN runs 100%. Simple.

So how to fix this?

1) compile in kernel p4_clockmod (2.6.x kernels)
2) use powernowd to control CPU speed dynamicaly, it not only will help reduce FAN usage but reguce unneeded CPU usage thus makin battery go twice longer

cheers
