Coping home folder to flashdrive in commnad line

At the moment I can't get into my x server and I want to copy my home folder to my flashdrive. When I run cp /home/conradtheart /mnt/FlashDrive it says "omitting directory" but it doesn't copy anything. What can I do?

You could also

tar -cvzf /mnt/FlashDrive/home.tar.gz /home/conradheart/
