Controlling monitor settings

Hi,

Is it possible to controll monitor settings like colour, brightness etc. through keyboard using some software rather than using the buttons on the monitor to adjusts the settings?
Is there any protocol or any way exist that helps in writing such a program to communicate with the monitor?

Regards,
Girish

One way (the main way I am aware of) is through the interface(s) which come along with certain video drivers from such mfgrs as ATI and nVidia.

You might want to look through the /sys and /proc directories, particularly if 'sysfs' interface is enabled in the kernel. It might allow you to echo some settings into the device driver, but I don't know about this for certain.
