Control of device names of USB to RS232 serial adapters

When you attach a USB to serial adapter (using the pl2303 driver) or reboot with an adapter attached your serial device will get a name like /dev/ttyUSB0, /dev/ttyUSB1 etc. This naming seems to be random and is a problem when you have several devices attached. Is there any way to control what adapter gets what name?

No mention of linux distribution / version you are running.
You can add a udev rule for each adapter and identify it by its serial number.
