Connection Speed
 

After establishing a dial-up connection (I know - it sucks), is there any way to determine my connection speed? Windows tells you automatically (ex: 49.2 KBps).

Which program are you using to start up your connection? I happen to use kppp, which will tell you the connection speed (at least according to the "CONNECT XXXXX" string) when you mouse over the kppp systray icon.

If you put W2 in one of your strings, and enable the log in your dialer you should then be able to see your DEC connection speed.

I used Network Device Control. That happened to work perfectly and easily (not a very common occurrence in Linux: as much as I loathe Windoze and want to see a viable alternative, Linux ain't it yet. It's usually a pain).

Anyway, I am loath to try a different connection method, as I'm reasonably sure it would be difficult, frustrating, and unnecessarily complicated, assuming it will work at all.

I am reasonably comfortable with the command line (I cut my computing teeth on VMS in 1985, so command line work doesn't scare me. I do miss VMS, though; Unix seems to delight in being unnecessarily cryptic). So if there is a command I can use (a switch on ping, maybe?), that'd be great.
