Question Connecting DVD-ROM through IDE controller...

I hope someone can help me out. I am having problems trying to get the DVD-ROM mounted. Maybe my situation is unique because the board does not have an IDE slot so I had to buy an IDE controller that works through a PCI slot. The DVD-ROM is connected and when I run this command

# dmesg | grep hdc
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xfc08-0xfc0f, BIOS settings: hdc: pio, hdd: pio

I do get mention of an ide?

My fstab file looks like this

/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0

I wouldn't know where to begin to get the system to recognize the optical drive... any help would be appreciated!

All that might mean is that the motherboard chipset supports IDE, but the board manufacturer decided not to add one.

Do you see any messages about the DVD drive in dmesg.

What card is it. Do you know what chipset it uses.

Cheers.

No there is nothing about the dvd drive in dmesg.

I'll check out the the IDE controller tonight and report back.

Unhappy

Finally got around to checking out the card... seems very generic, all I can see on the box for the manufacturer is: FC PCI Interface Card

Post the output of the command lspci. This might show us what type of chipset the controller is using.

Is this the line of interest?

No, that is the internal IDE controller. The Intel Corporation 82801CA is the chipset of the motherboard. I take it this is a Dell Poweredge server? From the brief info found it does have an IDE interface and the server came with a CDROM drive but I could not determine if it was SCSI or IDE.

The following could be the PCI card since the server specs did not mention anything about SATA. The PCI version has IDE (PATA) as well as SATA interfaces. This card requires the libata module and depending on what kernel your running might need to be patched.

02:02.0 RAID bus controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6421 IDE RAID Controller (rev 50)

Knowing the hardware details will confirm my assumptions. I also assume that your running Fedora but which version?

Here is some more info to go on...

There is a CDROM/Floppy that runs on SCSI but I physically uninstalled it to save some power since I won't be using it at all.

The PCI card has 2 SATA ports on it as well as the IDE port.

The machine is a Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server.

Machine is running CentOS 5.

What if I removed the PCI card and then ran lspci again to see the difference and find out what line goes missing from the list... would this help?

Are you sure that the PCI card is properly plugged in? I remember nearly pulling my hair out some time ago when I first installed a Promise pci IDE card. It turned out that it needed to be plugged in with a lot more force than other pci cards.

Yes the card is plugged in good... makes a click sound when loaded correctly.

The command lsmod show loaded modules. You can load the libata module via the command:
modprobe libata

There are also several SCSI subsystem modules that are also required but they are probably being loaded due to the fact that you have SCSI controllers. After you load the libata module check the output of the dmesg command to see if the drive is being recognized.

Yes, you should load libata, providing you are using a 2.6.20+ kernel. But even libata may not work in all cases. My IDE optical drives simply bomb out even when I use irqpoll or all-generic-ide boot arguments.
