No sound when WinTV Go card is installed

After I adding a Hauppauge WinTV Go card to my system, the sound is no longer working. The computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 (Slackware 10) with the integrated sound, network, and video. Taking the card out (or disabling the pci slots) restores sound functionality. I have googled everything I can think of with no results. Any ideas on how I can solve this? Thanks in advance for the help!

Here is the results from lsmod and lspci -v:

It appears it may be a conflict between your on-board sound device, and the sound device on your WinTV Go Card. But that was the easy answer...

LinuxLuvr 01-16-2005 07:36 AM

I realize that. The real question is how do I resolve it? Any ideas?

linuxdawg 01-16-2005 07:58 AM

I think the sound module that is usually "grabbed" by your on-board sound card is being "grabbed" by the sound card on you WinTV Go card. The solution may be to either force the sound module to use your on-board sound card, or force your WinTV Go card module NOT to use the sound module.

I'm not familiar with the sound system/subsystem of Linux. Up to this point it has always worked. How do I do this?

Before I forget, make sure the volume is turned up for the sound on this device with the Alsa Mixer. Just turn up all the volumes, to make sure this isn't the problem. I think when some of the Alsa Sound modules loads, it mutes the volume.

If that doesn't work, try renaming the snd-bt87x.ko file, then rebooting your PC. I'm sure there is another way of disabling snd-bt87x.ko, I just don't know how.

I think the problem is with this line here, as listed in the output of the lspci -v you posted:

snd-page-alloc 6328 0 [snd-intel8x0 snd-bt87x snd-pcm]

I think if you can get the "snd-bt87x" driver from the listing above, your sound should be restored, but I could be wrong.

More info could probably be found at the following URL:

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...a&module=bt87x

Sorry this post isn't more helpful.

linuxdawg, you da' (wo)man!

After many, many, MANY hours, following your line of thought, I finally got this going. The short story is I blacklisted 'bt87x' and tested the sound. When that worked, I made sure my modules.conf file had the 'intel8x0' sound card as the first card. I rebooted, had sound, and modprobe the 'bt87x' card. Success! Thanks for your help!
