configuring modem

i am a linux newbie.
after weeks of effort one day i got connected to internet.
my PCtelhsp56 mico modem didnt showed the no carrier error or
hung up as it used to be.but next time when i tried to connect to
the internet it showed the error "no carrier".
i read from PCtel AT commnds that the time to wait for a carier
can be adjusted by changing the s7 register.

any one know how to do it .

my modem works fine in windows.
is changing these registers affect it's functioning in windows.

also in modem logs it had a line

"Hardware hungup by lowering DTR"

my keyboard and mouse hangs frequently as i try to connect to net
using kppp.
i dont know what is this DTR.

please help me.
