configuring dual monitor on opensuse11.2 with Radeon 4350 HD

Hello All,

I'm new here. I hope someone will be able to help me out. I need to setup a dual-headed workstation that will be starting one instanse of certain program in each monitor.

I got screens configured. But get errors when running a command for second monitor.

DISPLAY=:0.0 firefox - this runs ok in left monitor

DISPLAY=:0.1 firefox - this erros out
Error: cannot open display: :0.1

I've tried configuring with sax2 and with aticonfig but still get error for second screen

Here is my xorg.conf:

Do you have a panel or menu on the second monitor (:0.1 ?). If so, can you bring up a terminal and 'echo $DISPLAY' to confirm that it really is :0.1 ? If it is, can you do "xhost +" and then try starting firefox with the DISPLAY variable to see if that works?

Thank you for a reply, Adam.

Unfortunatly, I don't have panel in second menu. When I start any program it opens up in left screen :0.0, then I can drug the program window to the second screen. Then if I run 'echo $DISPLAY' it show :0.0 Looks like xorg server treat both monitors as one large space. May be I need to run two instances of xorg server, one server per each screen? But I'm not sure how to do that.

OK, so what you are looking for is separate screens (aka. zaphod mode) and what you have is one large screen using xrandr. For separate screens, you need separate device, screen, and monitor sections in your xorg.conf file for each port on your video card. I have not tried this in a very long time, so I wish you luck :-) Google might have some good examples.

Thanks for direction. I'm googling and trying different configs. Found that zaphod mode is not used anymore. Xinerama is the new way of doing it. Others say that it still possible with xrandr.

Right now I'm trying to make it work with Xinerama option, configured xorg.conf with ' aticonfig --initial=dual-head --xinerama=on --screen-layout=right --dtop=horizontal --resolution=0,1600×1200,1280×1024,1024×768 --resolution=1,1024×768'

I got two screens but I only get to see portion of each screen. The resolution is very high. Don't know why it did not use the resolution from my config command.

First, you can not use separate screens with either xinerama or xrandr. Period.

Second, aticonfig is only a command you can use with the fglrx driver. According to your xorg.conf file, you are using the open source radeon driver.

Third, zaphod mode is still used and supported, though it can definitely be buggy at times.

Fourth, are you actually looking for separate screens? Or do you just want one large screen across both monitors?

I'm still googling for usable example to configure zaphod mode.

You are right, I was manually editing the xorg.conf to use radeon driver. The screens were going black with fglrx driver.

It sounds like 'zaphod' is the only option I have. And if it does not work I'm out of luck.

May be I'm looking to one large screen across both monitors. Can't start terminal to run 'echo $Display' due to resolution problem.

Well I can tell you right now that, based on what you said earlier, you are using one large screen across both monitors. DISPLAY will be :0.0 on both monitors. If that's what you want, fine, we can at least try and get your resolution working properly. If that's the case, I would honestly suggest backing up that xorg.conf file and creating a new *clean* one with 'Xorg -configure'.

If you do want separate screens (aka. zaphod mode) I really can't help.

You helped me already. I know now that I need to configure zaphod mode. Just need to find out how.
Thank you!

Trying some options in xorg.conf:

Option "ZaphodHeads" "VGA-0"
Option "ZaphodHeads" "DVI-0"
Option "Xinerama" "off"

Now I get normal screen with desktop on the left monitor and black screen on the right.

If I drag the mouse pointer from the left screen to the right it appears as X sign and would not go back to left screen.

Looking what else is wrong in my xorg.conf file. Any input would be appreciated.

Got it to work.

Even though the right screen is black and has no desktop I can still start programs in it from console in left screen. I can now put the script job in cron to start picture sideshow on left monitor and another picture sideshow with different set of pictures on right monitor.

DISPLAY=:0.0 gwenview -f -s /path/dir/*
DISPLAY=:0.1 gwenview -f -s /path/dir/*

But just curious, is there a way to switch the mouse and keyboard between screens? Right now the mouse locks up in the right screen if moved into it.

Trying to install xf86-video-ati driver.

but get error: it asks for xorg-macros version 1.3 or later

I install util-macros-1.10.0 and try to install xf86-video-ati again.

It still see xorg-macros version 1.2.2.

'configure.ac:35: error: xorg-macros version 1.3 or higher is required but 1.2.2 found'

What did I do wrong to install util-macros-1.10.0?

Here is how I did it:

I did 'cp xorg-macros.m4 /usr/share/aclocal'

and installed xf86-video-ati-6.13.1 again. Moved further but still errors out:

./configure: line 13083: syntax error near unexpected token `RANDR,'
./configure: line 13083: `XORG_DRIVER_CHECK_EXT(RANDR, randrproto)'

Please help!
