configuring a sound blaster live on fedora core 4

i just got a brand new sound blaster live 24 bit soundcard, and i'm trying to configure this dang thing on my computer (fedora core 4 KDE) . i tried running system-config-soundcard, and i tried the test sound, and that didn't work, so i tried rebooting it, and this message came up:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

any suggestions?

I've found there are more postings on this topic under Distros/Fedora,
including my own. Also run a search on "sound"...
