I don't use RH, and so I may not be correct. However, when I compile the same kernel version I have to add USB support (for my printer) and then it recognizes the printer. You will need to make sure you have parallel support. I use a HP DeskJet 920C but have not seen a printer driver in the kernel, just support for the device. For a driver go to www.linuxprinting.org and Till Kampeter and Grant Taylor have all the stuff you need to get a HP printer working.

I think the section of the kernel you need is Parallel port support and then Y for CONFIG_PARAPORT and CONFIG_PARAPORT_PC. Look in that section closely, and chose the help for each one to make certain you're enabling the correct support. Then if RH doesn't have your printer, go to the LinuxPrinting link and get the driver. It's probably better than whatever is in RH anyway. They even have a patch that allows my printer to print black with only the black cartridge and not the color also.

Also, if you have your old kernel config file you can look at it to see what was different in relation to your printer and parallel port support.

If this doesn't help, post back.

yeah, how strange, the 2.4.20-8 kernel configureation has options to compile in or as module hp print drivers, but its not there in 2.4.22
ahh well, off to linux printing i go..

thanX for the link.
