Conexant audio (HD-5500) conflict with on board intel audio

I spent a significant of time sorting out my sound card (Intel 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97) after installing a HD-5500. Thought I would post this to save someone else similar frustration.

The solution was to modify /etc/modprobe.d/sound from:

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-intel8x0 index=0

to

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
alias snd-card-1 cx88-alsa
options cx88-alsa index=1

Stefan
