Computer completely locks up, seemingly at random

My computer sometimes stops working.

(1) First there is a loud clicking sound, close to the sound of a grandfather clock.

(2) Then the peripherals stop working; no number lock light.

(3) The harddrive light is usually lit up continuously at this time.

(4) Waiting patiently for half an hour does not resolve the situation.

(5) Have tried on distributions Debian and Ubuntu, with full official updates installed.

(6) I have checked /var/log/messages. Approaching the time of the lock-up I see:

Code:

I am uncertain if these messages are connected to the lock-up problem. Where do I begin to diagnose this problem?

Assistance much appreciated.

Loud Clicking sound, would indicate to me Hard drive failure is imminent, especially when followed by a total freeze of the OS. Have you got a Win install to check if this happens on? How old is the hard drive? I would suggest backing everything up IMMEDIATELY and getting a new hard drive.....

I agree with lebabyg. If the computer is old (greater than two years), the power supply might also be failing. Another thing that could also be is a heat problem, so I suggest clean inside the computer case. Use only compress air, but never use a vacuum cleaner. A vacuum cleaner creates ions at the nozzle which can be several thousands of volts. Ions are like static electricity that have a lot lower current rating.

Have you tried any hard drive testing (e.g., badblocks or smartmontools)?
