Compiling new kernel

I´ve had trouble to make Direct Rendering for my intel i915 chipset. now i know I have to enable the agpgart and the drm for a i915 chipset, and for that I have to recompile the kernel, so can anyone tell me how to compile a new kernel and enable these modules?
I'm a newbie, so I need a little more details, please
Also beside that, do I need any drivers from DRI?
I heard Xorg has already the drivers, so there is no need, but still, do
I need any driver?

I have Ubuntu 6.04 with the 2.6.15-8 kernel.

Take a look http://www.freeos.com/articles/2589/ for a quick HOWTO. In general, uncompress the source and then 'make xconfig'. This will pop-up a GUI to select all the options (of which there are MANY). If you haven't done this before, this could be a tedious task. Good luck.

adrian_mx you don't need to re-compile a new kernel since most kernels depending on your distro already bring those things compiled in either [y] or [m]. Take a look at your /boot/you-kernel-config and open it with an editor. Most kernels have CONFIG_AGPGART=m and DRI is usually built-in. So take a look at the before re-compiling because sometimes its not necessary.

And if you do need to re-compile then all you need are the glibc, gcc, and libstdc++ devel libraries and the kernel source of course.
