The best bet is to go with a hardware modem. They are usually more expensive, but require no drivers at all. You are assured that any external modem will work. I do have an winmodem that works fine in linux. It is from Lucent Tech. and they do have driver support. Some retail boxes of theirs do even state that they support linux. It was also one of the first winmodems that you could use in linux. My Sony PCG-Z505 also has a Rockwell HCF chip which just recently got driver support, not thoroughly tested due to no dial up account.
If unsure born4linux recommended a great site to check for compatibility, and more info about winmodems.
