Compaq Presario Nvidia problems

I have now been trying hard sorting this video graphics problem out for too long. My temper is a boiling point as well as a good dose of morphine which I live on. Morphine doesn't help try and resolve problems it just muddles things up, so I am hoping once again that you might be able to assist. I have a Compaq Presario computer:
Model S0000 - System no DQ077A
CPU AMD Athion 2400 + (2.0ghz)
Integrated Nvidia GeForce 4MX
OS Ubuntu 8.04

All I can achieve is a screen resolution of 800x600. I have ticked all the Nvidia applications and tried to enable the card. None of this worked it only made things worse. In fact in the end I reloaded Ubuntu to get back to a descent size as all I could achieve was 400x600. VERY,Very frustrating. I followed the help files as much as I could but to no avail.

I then sourced an update from Nvidia. All it says is run the application:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run
This is what was downloaded for the Nvidia 4MX and it states its for Linux. I have clicked on it but not sure how to get it loaded onto the computer now. I located the file in Documents and I know that spmetimes a script has to be typed into the terminal box to get things loaded and thats my knowledge. Any help gratefully recieved.

Many thanks

Tony

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:H...ricted_drivers

the nvidia driver is in the restricted modules section of Ubuntu.

alternately you CAN use the one from nVidia if you so desire..

I would copy that nvidia file to someplace on the hard drive that is easy to get to .. say your home directory rather than the Desktop.

CTRL+ALT+F2 to switch to a terminal
sudo su
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
to shut down X

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
cd /home/<username>
chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run

Follow the prompts as the installer runs, the defaults are usually acceptable. it will compile a kernel module for your machine and install it. It will then give you the option to use an nvidia utility to configure your xorg file, I suggest you use it.

/etc/init.d/gdm start to restart X

Installing the driver from the restricted modules section of Ubuntu will surely be easier.

Thanks for that I will gget the machine running later. I have tried the Nvidia appts in Ubuntu and none of them worked. This is the download from Nvidia for my model of graphics card. I have it in Documents so wil give it a go. Fingers crossed and will let you know what happens.

Somethings is not working here I copied and pasted and get denials. I ama complete novice as far as scripting and finding thing on Linux is concerned. There is a lot of jargon and assumptions you know where everything is. I tried through add/remove applications ticking Nvidia boxes and that did not resolve anything, so I presume that is what you meant by modules, they made things worse. If I enable the graphics card that made things worse. Maybe I will have another go with the tick boxes on add/remove. If not I will just load the computer into the bin. Too many hours not knowing where and what wears thin. Wish I had the knowledge, but keep using it I suppose I will get there

Any further help would be grateful

Well I did manage to try and load it and it failed. Thats a novice for you. Sorry I hate to be dependent on people but I am out of my depth. Once this is sorted great I can steam ahead. Headaches until then though
