Cloning boot disk using DD

Hello,

I would like to mirror my boot disk /dev/sda on to a new hard disk ( same size as the original) using the command " DD ". My linux version is AS2.4

Can someone point me the steps involved in it?

Is there any other command or tool to chieve the same??

Thanks,
Vani

Hi.

Just run 'dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/newdisk bs=16k'

The bs value adjusts how much data is read and written at a time, and this can affect the speed of the operation. I've found 16k to be about the optimum.

Add conv=sync so dd does not miss data.

Some filesystems come with a filesysem dump utility.

There is also Partimage from http://www.sysresccd.org which has similar features like Norton Ghost.
