Linux handles memory tru the kernels' scheduler. Before you point at the RAm please use top(1) or free(1) to determine what is using your CPU, RAM and hardware. Stuff you wanna tweak wrt the VM part, like amount of memory used for cache, writing and other caching behaviour is done tru sysctl(1), the entries live in /proc/sys/vm, and the docs are in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/(vm.txt?)
