Hi all. For Christmas, I am getting up sum ca$h and buying a new video card! I need an expert opinion at which card to buy. I need a videocard that is agp and has 3d support. It needs automatic support for slackware 9.1 or 10. I have a Cedega that is .tgz so I need to keep slackware, which is cool n e waze, but I need a video card for it that has the 3d x-lib thingy support for my games. I need sum help. Thankz

P.s. I need to know if AGP slots have a voltage thing. I had a sticker on my board that said something about the voltage of the AGP and the sticker peeled off with the heat.

Do not get anything less than a nVidia GeForceFX 5700 Ultra for playing games. Also look at the fine print that the maximum speed in nanoseconds the memory chips can run at. With this information you will see that the video cards with more memory capacity does not live up to its name. Memory chips like DDR3 will not produce a lot of heat like DDR2 and DDR because they use a lot less voltage. You go for the nVidia 6x00 series of video cards but make sure you do some homework on the memory bandwidth and the 6x00 series chips.

My suggestion: Check the level of Linux support when it comes to drivers. Avoid manufacturers who put Linux support on the back burner.

As for the voltage question, some of the high-end video cards have some reasonably high power demands, and thus require a healthy power supply. In other words, don't install a video card that needs a 400W power supply into a box that is being run on a 250W unit. As for the specifics about the actual numbers your specific card might need, check with the manufacturer -- J.W.
