choosing driver for framebuffer?

Hi!

Im having trouble installing ubuntu 6.10 on a radeon x850xt...

I installed the fglrx drivers and that allowed me to boot into the desktop with X running...

However when i try to shut down, or log out, or try to get tty (ctrl+alt+1-6), the screen goes blank and the monitor "shuts down", i.e. i get the blinking light and the panel is off...

I noticed that the same thing happens when i try to boot with the "vesa" driver configured under /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Ive also noticed that sudo lsmod | grep vesa gives me this:
vesafb 11048 0
cfbcopyarea 5376 2 vesafb,vga16fb
cfbimgblt 4352 2 vesafb,vga16fb
cfbfillrect 6272 2 vesafb,vga16fb

... which i understand as the fact that framebuffer is running under vesa drivers...

Now my question is: how do i make it so that fb runs under the fglrx drivers, or simply how can i update the vesa drivers (in hope that this issue does not reoccur)...

Im kinda new to linux, so go gentle on me plz

Thx ahead!

Have you tried just specifying "ati" or "radeon" for the driver? (Though your chipset is only supported to 2D.)

Have you tried the radeonfb framebuffer driver?
(Though I have seen reports that using radeonfb can make fglrx behave oddly - same reports indicate that vesa framebuffer is fine with fglrx.)

How did you install fglrx (via synaptic/aptitude/apt-get I hope)?

Have you disabled the "composite" extension?

What does glxinfo say?
Review the dmesg | grep fglrx and Xorg.0.log files too.

ati doesnt work

fglrx works until i try to change the resolution, after which everything crashes.

radeon is the only one that works.

btw, yeah ive used apt-get. and composite IS disabled...

im using radeon for the time being...

so where do i set radeonfb for the fb driver?

Check glxinfo and the logfiles first.

You can modprobe the radeonfb module to try it out I guess. Remove vesafb too.
Have you looked through all that reading?

Now - what reason do you have to believe that the framebuffer driver is the problem (there seems to be no history of conflice between fglrx/radeon and vesafb for eg.)
