Choosing between two SATA PCI controllers

Dear all,

I would like to buy PCI to SATA II controller for my machine. I'd like to use them on Debian Lenny stable (2.6.26-2 kernel). So I'm choosing between noname (Logilink ?) card with Sil3124 chip and HighPoint 1720 card. Functionality basically is the same for both cards or at least it is enough for my needs. I will run mdadm anyway. So the question is should I really pay 3 times more for HighPoint ? Is there any reason for that or Sil3124 will do the same ? What about compatibility ? As I know both cards are supported on thet kernel. So your thoughts...

I can't recommend Silicon Image.

The HighPoint 1720 seems to be HighPoint RocketRAID 1720 SATA2 RAID 2-Channel Controller, and that's probably why it's so expensive, it's a RAID controller.

Actually its fakeraid controller based on Marvell's 88SX6042 chip. So that's why I don't understand 3 times bigger price.

Ugh, Marvell, that's bad too. If Linux.tar.gz says the Sil3124 works, I guess get that, but maybe search some more.

Anyway I don't need hardware RAID because I will use mdadm. So I'm thinking about Sil3124. Price is the most important here I think because for the different price I will get basically the same.

Highpoints tend to be real hardware raid cards. Even if they have a single drive setup it would seem to me to be a way better choice.
