CDROM permissions-MEPIS

CDROM mounting and permissions

I have Mepis 3.3. I hear the sounds associated with log in and out, but am not able to play music Cd on CDROM. ALSA is configured

The Cd is mounted with the following permission line dr-x---- (found by holding cursor over the icon
Checking ls -al /dev/cdrom I get
Rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 2005--4-07 14:01 /dev/cdrom -- /dev/hdc

Checking hdc produces brw-rw-rw 1 root disk 22, o 2001-04-14 20:43 /dev/hdc
Also on dev/dsp0 I get
Crw-rw-rw
Dsp1 is
Crw-rw---

And so one 1-5 or so.

Mespis likes my sound card, Ensoniq ct 1370

What more can I do?

I assume that you have 'CD Audio' turned up in the mixer and not muted?

Does your CDRom have an analogue audio cable between it and the soundcard? If it doesn't, try telling your cd player to use Digital audio rather than analogue audio.

cable

Since I installed the sound card directly into the mother board, and there were no cables involved, I assume that there is no analog cable.
However, I have not a clue as to how I tell my CDROM to go digital.
Thanks

It's an option in the KCDplayer setup box. I'm not at my linux box right now, so I can't tell you exactly where - but probe around in there and you'll find it!

If you're using any other CD Player you should be able find a similar setting somewhere.

The easiest thing to do is to connect the small cable from the CD to the soundcard. If you don't have that cable, then you'll need to use digital extraction for sound. There are a number of threads on that topic here at LQ, including this one which may be of interest. Good luck with it -- J.W.
