cd writing slow on FC3, kernel 2.6.9

Hi folks,

I am experiencing a strange problem with CD writing after installing fedora core 3:

I use k3b or xcdroast to setup a disk for write and click the write button (at speed 52x)
The writing process begins, but the system lags really bad and is almost unresposive.
After wrirting some 65M the burn speed slows down to 16x and the writing continues (a little system lag is still noticed)

My system setup is:
P4/3,2GHz(hyperthreaded)
MB: Gigabyte titan 865PE
1GB DDR RAM
160GB SATA hard drive (SATA mapped to the secondary IDE channels)
TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-6802B (primary slave)
LG 52x cd-writer as primary master (see below)

I have written CDs at 52x on fedora core 2 without any problems
I use the ATA: interface (tried ATAPI but does not help)

The problem persists if I use the ide-scsi module (by adding it as a kernel parameter at boot)
I also tried using different frontends (xcdroast and k3b) but it does no change.
I also tried with the original FC3 kernel 2.6.9-1.667smp but it also does no change.

here is the output of hdparm

# hdparm -i /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

I hope I have not missed some important information
Thank you in advance for the help
