cd sound problem

All right, I think I know the answer already, but someone might surprise me. I am running Mandrake 9.1. My sound works fine for everything but CD's. I've looked and there's no cable connecting my cdrom to the motherboard(it's an onboard sound system). That's because it was shipped with XP and everybody thinks you will run XP so they don't bother giving you a cord. Obviously, XP uses some sort of software to transfer the audio eliminating the need for the cord. Is there something like that for linux?

WINDOWS SUCKS!!!!!

xmms has a CD plugin to play over the BUS. It steals CPU, which in general, isn't much, but never a concern for mass produced PCs. If a PC shop charged you more than 50c for one of the cables you need and that they have 2000 laying around, I would be surprised.

Yeah, you're right. I should just stick in one of those cables. I'm always cautious of opening my computer, though, I have a bad history. I guess I can just grip all my cds to the hard drive. Thanks!
