CD drives refuse to mount

I noticed this just a little bit ago, but both drives used to work (though the dvd drive only could read dvds through an obfuscated way, and didn't read cdroms at all).

When i booted up today, the dvd drive didn't work, so i messed around with wires a bit and got both drives working (cdrw and dvdrw) and now they both refuse to mount anything.

/dev/hdd mounting hangs, and /dev/hdc mounting says i must specify a filesystem, then tells me that the sb of the cd is corrupt. But neither drive blinks their lights.

---------------------------------------------------

bash-3.00# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom/
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
bash-3.00# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom/
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

bash-3.00# mount /dev/hdd /mnt/dvdrom/

----------------------------------------------------

brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 22, 0 2005-05-16 06:30 hdc
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 22, 64 2005-05-16 06:30 hdd

----------------------------------------------------

bash-3.00# hdparm /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument
bash-3.00# hdparm /dev/hdd

-----------------------------------------------------

please help!

What did the dmesg command tell you when you ran it?

Have you been able to use this cd on another computer? Is it a comercially pressed one? Does it happen with all cds?
